The trail of nativity scenes

Christmas customs in their most beautiful form – twelve handmade nativity scenes are lovingly embedded in the Rathauspark

Nativity scenes have been around for over 1,500 years and to build them has a long tradition in Austria, which is honored accordingly on the Nativity Scenes Trail of the Vienna Christmas Dream. After the success of the last few years, in which old Viennese nativity scenes adorned the park, this year the exhibition shows oriental examples: They were the most original form of explaining the Christmas story. Their fame started in southern Europe around 1480. Twelve handcrafted works of art depict the biblical scenes around Jesus’ birth. A leisurely walk invites you to discover and be amazed, for the impressive nativity scenes are right in detail an crafted with high presision. All exhibits are provided by the „Wiener Krippenverein“, which every year has been constructing up to seventy nativity scenes since 2001. Famous "Herzerlbaum"

A tree - 200 shining hearts - thousands of shining faces. This popular symbol of love and Christmas will once again illuminate the Rathauspark this year.

Visit the symbolic “Herzerlbaum”! The maple-leaved plane tree, decorated with 200 glowing hearts, will again be an integral part of the Vienna Christmas Dream in 2021 and will shine as a popular photo hotspot and romantic scene for all visitors to “Rathausplatz” and far beyond.

Meet me under the Mistletoe!

All over the world, couples and new lovers kiss under mistletoe branches at Christmas – a tradition that is one of the most beautiful Christmas customs and Vienna shouldn’t miss out on. The mistletoe pavilion will make the butterflies in your stomach fly!

UNICEF tree of wishes for children

A sparkling, far-reaching symbol for children’s rights.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of UNICEF, light installations throughout Austria draw attention to the plight of millions of children worldwide. The Viennese Christmas Dream supports this campaign and, together with UNICEF, they turn Austria blue: A large plane tree in the southern part of the “Rathauspark” is bathed in blue light in Advent in order to raise awareness for the right of every child to lead a healthy and happy life.

The UNICEF tree of wishes for children invites you to pause for a moment, forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life and word wishes - for a world without war, without disease, without hunger ... After all, Christmas is also the feast of hope.
